The Garden Design Process

My job as your garden designer is to understand your particular needs as well as the nature of the site and to propose practical solutions. A trained and experienced eye is able to see past immediate shortcomings and to visualise new possibilities. In this way we work in partnership to achieve the result you are seeking - a garden to enjoy and to be proud of.

Getting Started
At the beginning of our relationship I start by finding out what you want from your garden:

    • How do you want to use your garden and what do you want it to do for you?

    • Is your garden primarily somewhere to grow and display plants, or do you want it be somewhere for you, your family and friends to relax in pleasant surroundings?

    • You may want to make room for children, pets or wildlife, a treasured piece of sculpture or favourite plant; you may need to accommodate car parking, dustbins and a washing line.

    • How much time would you willingly devote to maintaining and developing the garden in the future?

The Detailed Design
A single consultation may be all that is required. More usually, the design service will run through a number of stages which might include:

    • a site survey
    • outline plans and sketches
    • construction detailing and specification
    • planting plans
    • lighting plans

At each stage you will be able to discuss with me what elements are to be included and what materials and plants will be selected. Scaled drawings and sketches will show you how the completed garden will look and detailed working drawings will give precise instructions on how it is to be built and planted.

Getting It Done
Having detailed plans will enable you to obtain competitive quotations for your project, or to implement it in stages.

You may wish to organise some or all of the work yourselves. Alternatively I will manage part or whole of the project for you including:

    • obtaining quotations
    • choosing the best value contractors
    • checking the quality of workmanship, plants and materials
    • controlling costs
    • managing the work schedule and time scales

The End Result
Working together, we achieve the garden you want by making the best use of space and garden conditions, whilst ensuring you receive the best possible value for money.
