Family Garden Overlooking Lyme Bay
My clients were renovating an Arts and Crafts house with spectacular views over Lyme Regis to Chesil Beach. Spectacular views usually go with steep slopes, exposure to wind and being overlooked by neighbours and this was no exception; furthermore planning permission had just been granted for a block of apartments on an adjoining plot so screening was an urgent issue. The existing terraced garden had some charming features including brick steps contemporary with the house, but was in need of much painstaking weeding, repair and replanting. Moreover it lacked any level space for relaxation. With a new baby, two businesses to run and the whole house a building site, making space for relaxation and play was clearly a top priority for my clients.
A new stone-paved terrace was formed outside the expanded and refurbished kitchen, with steps down to a level area of lawn surrounded by soft billowing planting of hebes, rosemary, phlomis and cistus. More steps lead to a circular gravel seating area edged in lavender and roses, sheltered by a heat-reflecting stone wall and well placed to enjoy the view. Ornamental pear trees along the boundary provide visual screening. Both the planting style and hard landscape detailing reflect the strongly Arts and Crafts character of the house.
